Applying a DTF transfer is straightforward, but getting your settings right makes all the difference between a print that lasts and one that peels after a few washes. Here's what you need to know:
Temperature: Set your heat press to 300–320°F (149–160°C). This range activates the adhesive and bonds the transfer firmly to the fabric.
Pressure: Use medium-to-firm pressure. If your press has a numbered dial, aim for a 4–6 out of 10. Too light and the transfer won't fully bond; too heavy and you risk flattening delicate fabrics.
Time: Press for 10–15 seconds. That's usually all it takes for a solid, lasting bond.
Hot or Cold Peel? Most DTF transfers are cold peel, meaning you let the transfer cool for 10–20 seconds before slowly peeling the film back. Some transfers are hot peel — always check the instructions that come with your specific transfer, since peeling too soon or too late can affect the final look.
Pro tip: After peeling, do a finishing press for 5–10 seconds with a piece of parchment or silicone paper on top. This helps lock in the edges and gives the print a smoother, more finished feel.
Always test on a scrap piece of fabric or a similar garment first, especially when working with a new fabric type or a new batch of transfers.
